This is a birthday cake I did for my grandmother. The cake is just plain pound cake, and the frosting is butter cream. Butter cream is amazing! It is great for decorating, but its harder to use than fondant. I just did some simple piping on the sides and adorned them with some little stars. The scallop edging around the bottom is hard when you first start, but after you learn to control the pressure, and the angle of your wrist, it’s a breeze. I used a fluted pan when baking this cake, you can cover the hole in the top (of the cake not the pan) with a circle of plastic or cardboard, so a circle cut out of a paper plate worked like a charm. You can also fill the whole with candy, if you feel like giving the recipient a surprise, skittles are great for kids parties, and M&M’s. I left the middle of this cake empty, but I would like a chance to make another with candy in it!
